Holiday Hazards

We had a call from one of our clients worried because her dog had just swallowed a nylabone. After getting all the information from owner ( it was great she had the package it came in) we were able to figure out that all would be good by tomorrow, but more often than not these situations can result in surgery. Read the article below to see how you can prevent a trip to the Vet this Holiday season.

The Holiday season is upon us and that means adding in some additional precautions for your pet.  In the season of overindulgence, it’s tempting to share toys and treats with our canine and feline family.  When shopping for a safe chew toy for your pup, keep in mind they may not know the difference between chew and swallow.  Make sure chew toys are large enough that they can’t be ingested.  Bones and antlers can be very hard and result in fractured teeth.  Toys that are too soft can be torn into pieces and swallowed resulting in choking hazards or obstruction of the stomach or intestines.  Picking a toy in which your thumb nail can be indented ensures that it is soft enough to prevent fractured teeth.  During this time of year, we enjoy rich meals with all the fixings.  High fat treats in your pet can results in pancreatitis-inflammation of the pancreas, obesity and toxicity.  Fido can smell through your wrapping paper, so make sure holiday goodies, particularly containing chocolate, are kept out of reach.  Garlic, onions and chocolate can be life threatening to your pet. It is best to indulge your pet with safe toys, treats designed for them, and an extra long walk and save that last piece of pie for yourself.
