Surrendered Dogs at MAH Need Home

Last week this sweet little dog was hit by a car and dropped off on our doorstep with injuries that needed urgent attention by Dr. Shackelton.  Lake County Animal Care/Control offered to pay for a small portion of medical care for this unowned dog but that will not cover her costs.  After a week of veterinary care and rest she has slowly regained the use of one leg.  Middletown Animal Hospital is giving her time to heal and necessary treatments including laser therapy and underwater treadmill sessions to hopefully regain the use of her other front leg.  We are hopeful that she will recover and will be searching for her forever home-people who will take care of her and treat her like the special girl that she is.  In the meantime she can definitely go to a foster home.  She is now using a brace on her leg to help her regain the use of it.  We discovered that she will go after any type of bird on the ground and can move along quite fast on her walks despite her handicap!
She is approx 1-2 yrs.  We spayed and vaccinated her.  Very sweet, gives kisses and wags tail.  When you pet her she rolls over on her back and presents her belly to be rubbed.  She plays well with other dogs.  We put her in the Cat Room with a kitten and she wagged her tail as she greeted it, it hissed and then after that wasn’t really interested in the cat but wasn’t scared either.  We did find out that she will chase a cat if it runs, though.  She has an underbite.
Because she was dragging her leg we ended up amputating it but she gets along perfectly with 3 legs.  When all was done, MAH put more than $4,000 into this little dog but she was very special and worth the effort.
Update:  Karen Schaver from Orphan Dog took her and is sure she will find her a good home!

This handsome purebred German Shepherd was scheduled to be euthanized because he was dog aggressive and un-neutered.  Since he was friendly and sociable with people, Dr. Smith decided to give him a chance and immediately neutered him.  He was declined by one GS Rescue group due to being dog aggressive because they need to foster dogs in multi dog households.  But we feel that these dogs can do well in a single dog household and deserve a chance.  He has been heart worm tested negative and given a Rabies vaccine.  MAH invested $350 into him not including boarding him for 3 weeks.  Please get the word out to GS lovers that he would make a good pet. Our technician, Jenna has been working with him on obedience training and after a week of teaching him manners and walking him with the Perfect Pace no pull leash he has made amazing progress.  He is very sweet and listens well.  He does not bark all the time like some German Shepherds.  He is not food aggressive.  We have introduced him while on leash and between fences to other dogs and he has behaved well and listens to his handler so we have no proof that he is dog aggressive.  We believe that once the testosterone is out of his system he will be much better.
Update:  A couple from Concord saw him advertised through German Shepherd Rescue and came to visit him this morning.  They have no kids or other dogs in the household.  It was a great match so they adopted him 12/23/16. They are long time German Shepherd lovers and have experience with training them through the military. When they met each other Skylar took to them both immediately as they did to him. It is bittersweet, we are happy he has a new home but we got so attached that there were tears as he left.
