Feline Immunodeficiency Virus

FIV is a lifelong virus that is transmissible through saliva from cat to cat through fighting and biting. The virus causes an overall weakened immune system. This can lead to a shorter life span by eventually debilitating the immune system or sometimes  it can be tolerated well and the cat may lead a long normal life. If your cat tests positive for FIV, it is best to keep your pet indoors only and separate from other cats so as not to spread this highly contagious disease.  If you do have an outdoor cat it is imperative that you test and vaccinate for FIV and other diseases because it is likely that your cat will come into contact with other outdoor or feral cats who are not vaccinated.

FIV attacks the immune system of cats similar to HIV in humans.  FIV is preventable.  Vaccines are critical to prevent common diseases in pets and people!  New vaccine schedules reflect updated knowledge about duration of immunity and emerging diseases.  Please discuss this preventable disease with the veterinarians at Middletown Animal Hospital.
