Equine & Large Animals

equine veterinarian  Dr. Smith with horse

All Valley Equine

All Valley Equine, a part of Middletown Animal Hospital, provides specialized services for horses and their owners.  We are the only Veterinary Hospital in our county who has 3 knowledgeable equine veterinarians offering appointments 6 days a week as well as emergency availability after hours for current clients.  Our fully-equipped ambulatory truck provides mobile service throughout Lake County, Napa County, and Sonoma County.  The truck is equiped with portable X-Ray, Ultrasound, Shock Wave Unit, Laser Therapy, Mechanized Dental Instruments, Surgery Packs, a complete Pharmacy, and all the tools and instruments needed for field procedures -- even a dart gun!

The hospital also offers and encourages haul-in appointments.  This not only saves you the call charge, but also affords your horses the opportunity to benefit from the use of our customized hospital resources, including stocks/palpation chute, hospital stall, round pen, trained assistants, x-ray processing, and expanded inventories.  It also enables us to hospitalize those cases that require ongoing care, like colics or assisted breeding.

Minor to moderate surgical procedures (castration, cryptorchid castration, hernia repair, splint removal, neurectomeis, joint lavage, tumor removals) can also be performed at the Hospital.  We are pleased to be able to offer inhalation/gas anesthesia, the very best and safest method to anesthetize horses.  For more complicated orthopedic and colic surgeries, referral to the veterinary School at UC Davis is provided.

For the health of your horses' teeth all of our Doctors use Equine Mechanical Dentistry, and we provide this service to regular and referral clients throughout the north bay.  Mechanical Dentistry achieves excellent results and has replaced hand floating as the superior method.

Dr. Smith, Dr. Holtz, and Dr. Shackelton are all equine veterinarians.  Dr. Shackelton completed a year long internship after graduating UC Davis at Pioneer Equine Hospital in Oakdale, CA.  She has worked at Middletown Animal Hospital since November 2014 and has a passion for horses.  All of our doctors have their own horses.

RANCH CALLS and HOUSE CALLS
Our ambulatory truck responds to house calls if you are unable to bring your pet to the clinic.  It is fully equipped for horse care as well as llamas, goats, and even yaks!  We can provide limited services and transportation for small pets.  Clients appreciate at-home euthanasias for small animals in the comfort of their own home.
