Firework Fears in Pets

Middletown Animal Hospital is prepared for Fourth of July Fireworks and expect clients to call for help before the weekend.  Many pets are fearful of loud noises, such as thunder and fireworks. With the Fourth of July around the corner, it is important to be prepared. If possible it is best to stay at home with fearful pets to monitor them and help calm them. Make sure your pet has a collar and tag as well as a microchip if possible. Many pets escape from houses and yards during this holiday. It is estimated that 40% of dogs have noise anxiety and that July 5th is the busiest day for shelters taking in runaway dogs.  There are a variety of medications available that can help especially fearful pets with anxiety including some new ones on the market.  It is best to discuss the options with our Veterinarians to find a solution that is best for your circumstances.  Thundershirts and pheromones are non-medicine alternatives that can also calm some dogs as well.
