Summer sores and Habronema

Summer Sores and Habronema

Cutaneous Habronemiasis, also more commonly referred to as Summer Sores, is a seasonal skin disease in horses caused by the larvae of the stomach worm Habronema. Summer sores are a common problem during the warmer months when flies are most prevalent, Lake County has hot weather so horses here are susceptible. Summer sores develop when a fly carrying habronema lands on a horse (generally moist orifices) transferring the parasite. Some of the most common areas for summer sores are the eyes, lips/mouth, genitalia, wounds and legs (also can be found in armpit area and along midline). The larvae can't complete their life-cycle in these tissues so they cause a hypersensitivity (allergic reaction) resulting in non-healing wounds.

Tips To help prevent Summer Sores & Habronema

  • Fly Control Is KEY!! If you can cut out the flies you break the habronema's lifecycle. Use of fly deterrents such as sprays, fly sheets, leg-bands, or even feed throughs (work best when all the horses on ranch use) are all proactive steps you can take.
  • Deworm your horses with Ivermectin
  • Keep wounds dressed
  • Involve a Vet!! if your horse has a slow healing wound or is persistently scratching one area call your local veterinarian. It is always better to be on the safe side and call a vet before the problem gets worse.
